A research initiative
The Simons Foundation says it, Anthropic, and OpenAI are committing a combined $15 million in funding and resources to help mathematicians work with AI. The foundation will manage awards, including a planned open call for proposals, and support workshops and other community efforts to evaluate AI-assisted results and develop shared practices.
Funding is not a result
Anthropic and OpenAI will also provide tools and computing resources for foundation-supported researchers. This is not an announcement of a new model, unrestricted free computing, or a completed mathematical breakthrough. We have not established an application deadline or tested the research tools.
Our take
Editorial analysis: support for checking results and sharing methods may matter as much as access to a stronger model. For readers following AI mathematics, look for clearly stated problems, reviewable arguments, and an explanation of what people verified. The size of a funding announcement cannot establish the correctness or usefulness of the eventual work.
