A prototype still needs a production review
OpenAI described AI-assisted hardware work on November 3. One prototype combined a case, electronics, and software, but manufacturing still needed human review. The company reports missed production limits, acceptable size variations, and assembly details. [1]
This is a company research report, not a new public design tool. We have not repeated the work. [1]
Our take
If you ask an AI helper to sketch a case for a small electronic project, give the person reviewing it the measurements, connector positions, and intended material. Ask them to check how the parts fit and how the case will be made before ordering a prototype. A tidy drawing may still put a hole in the wrong place.
Keep the first job small, and make the review visible. A useful handoff says what was checked, what remains uncertain, and who can approve production. Track the review effort too, so you can judge whether the AI saved time overall.
