OpenAI

OpenAI lists October 23 shutdowns. Check the exact model ID.

A separate group of older API models has an October 23 shutdown date. The exact snapshot matters more than the family name.

Sources checked 2026-10-23. Access and availability can change.

An earlier notice reaches its listed deadline

OpenAI’s API deprecations page lists October 23, 2026 as the shutdown date for selected older models and fine-tuned versions under its April 22 legacy-model notice. This is a deadline follow-up, not a new announcement.

Examples include gpt-4.1-nano, gpt-4.1-nano-2025-04-14, and gpt-4o-2024-05-13. Consult the official tables for all affected IDs, aliases, and listed substitutes; the deadline does not cover every model in those families.

October and January are separate cohorts

The October 14 notice covered by our earlier briefing lists January 14, 2027 for a different group of GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.1 mini snapshots. Do not apply one deadline to every similarly named model.

At this check, the October 23 group remained under “Upcoming deprecations.” The page specifies no shutdown hour or timezone. We have not made API requests to establish whether a particular account can still use an affected model.

Our take

For experienced technicians, start with the exact model IDs and short aliases configured in deployed applications, scheduled jobs, and fine-tuned dependencies. A familiar family name can hide a different snapshot and deadline.

Before adopting a listed substitute, check the request parameters, tool use, structured outputs, and representative results your application needs. A substitute is not a promise of identical behavior. We have not tested a migration.
