Two separate initiatives
Google.org announced 17 selected organizations that will share a total of $36 million for research using AI. Examples include storm-warning work and battery-material research. Recipients can choose to join a six-month accelerator with engineering support and mentorship. These awards follow an earlier application round.
Separately, Google DeepMind and Google Cloud pledged scientific-model access and a total of $3 million in computing credits for up to 200 European researchers. These are targeted research programs; neither announcement offers unrestricted free computing to everyone.
Our take for general readers
Editorial analysis: AI can help specialists study storms or materials as well as write text. Funding supports that work; it does not prove a breakthrough. As these projects develop, independently evaluated results and practical benefits will tell readers more than the size of the announcement.
