What changed
Anthropic’s October 21 update introduces API version 2026-10-21 and major client-library releases. This catch-up is for AI geeks and experienced technicians maintaining Claude API applications or gateways. Python 2.0.0 and TypeScript 1.0.0 are examples that send the new API version by default. [1][4] This briefing covers an announcement made earlier today.
Two parts of the migration
The API version changes request validation. Sending temperature, top_p, or top_k now returns a 400 error, even at default values. Direct document blocks in assistant messages and nonempty citation arrays in user text also become errors under the new version. [2]
Separately, the SDK migration moves API-key authentication to Authorization: Bearer. The Claude API accepts either header, while some platform-specific clients retain their existing format. Check gateways that read only X-Api-Key and the language-specific library changes. [2]
Previous API versions are deprecated and may be unavailable to new users; no shutdown date was established. Amazon Bedrock supports the new version only for Claude 4.7 and later models. This is separate from updating Claude Code or the desktop app. [2][3][4]
Our take
Treat the dependency and API version as a planned change together. Before rollout, send representative requests through the gateway your application actually uses. Check authentication, document and citation handling, streaming, and tool results. Compare the behavior your users need, and preserve a working recovery route.
We have not installed these releases, called the API, or tested an integration. Follow the current migration guide for your language and hosting platform.
