What OpenAI announced
OpenAI’s October 27 release notes announce iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins for ChatGPT on the web, desktop app, and iOS, across all ChatGPT plans. The advertised uses include finding mail, reviewing a schedule, and updating calendar events. Its help page describes a global rollout subject to workspace app controls. Availability in an individual account still needs checking. [1][2]
Mail and Calendar are separate plugins. Each includes read-only contact lookup; standalone Contacts and Reminders plugins are outside this launch. Installing one service does not authorize the other. [2][3]
This is a newly discovered catch-up. We did not establish the announcement’s first public hour or test the plugins.
The account details matter
OpenAI’s setup guide says both connections use an Apple app-specific password in the connection form. Mail expects an iCloud address ending in @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com; Calendar expects the primary Apple Account email, which may be different. The guide says to keep passwords out of the conversation and use the connection form. [3]
An installed plugin, a connected provider account, and permission to perform an action are separate requirements. OpenAI says workspace restrictions and the connected account’s existing permissions still apply. [2][3]
OpenAI also says information accessed through apps may be used for model improvement on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro when the relevant setting is on. Review the data settings that apply to your account before connecting personal or business mail. [2]
Our take
For an iCloud user who already needs ChatGPT to help with messages or appointments, this could reduce copying between apps. Begin with one service and a small, clearly defined task. Confirm the account shown, then compare a summary with the original message or event before acting on it.
A calendar update deserves a final check of the date, time zone, participants, and intended calendar. A successful summary does not establish that a later change was made correctly. Ask for the proposed change first, review the supported action and permission prompt, then verify the saved result. Decide how much access the task needs before connecting another service.
