What changed
OpenAI’s October 21 announcement expands ChatGPT advertising to 26 additional countries, bringing the stated total to 89. It says ads appear only on Free and Go, while Plus, Pro, and Enterprise remain ad-free. This is an advertising expansion, rather than a new language-model release.
OpenAI says conversations stay private from advertisers, customer data is not sold, and ads are labeled and kept separate from answers. These are the company’s statements about its system. We have not independently audited those protections.
Separate answers still leave context to consider
In a companion engineering article, OpenAI describes an ads service running alongside answer generation, with separate models and code. It says ad sessions can retain context across turns and multiple conversations; when a user opts into personalization, available nonsensitive information from past conversations can also be considered.
The article describes sponsored placements below an answer. It also says an ad selected by the server may never appear if it arrives too late or fails a later check. The existence of an ads system therefore does not mean every reply carries an ad.
Our take
For beginners, pause at the sponsored label. A paid placement beside a helpful answer still needs the same checks as any advertisement: who is selling, what the offer actually includes, and whether the claim holds up at the destination. An answer and a placement can each be mistaken.
Review the personalization choices shown in your own account before sharing information you would not want used in that context. A statement that advertisers do not see conversations is different from a statement that conversation context plays no part in ad selection.
For small businesses, a larger advertising footprint establishes reach, not a return on spending. We have not bought ads, measured campaign results, or tested privacy controls. Treat the announcement as a change to understand before deciding whether it fits a business need.
