What changed
On November 5 Baidu announced ERNIE 5.5 Flash Base, a text model at the end of its initial training. The files contain the model weights, the learned values it uses to make predictions. Developers can start from these files and train the model further for a task of their own. This version comes before the additional training that teaches a model how to respond to instructions. What the size numbers mean
Baidu says the model has 280 billion parameters overall and uses about 14 billion for each small piece of text it processes. That describes how much of the model does work at a time. The smaller, FP8 version still lists about 288 GB of files. Storage for the download and memory to run the model are separate requirements. [1] [2] [3]
Our take
The release gives experienced teams a starting point if they want to train a model for a specific task, such as putting support requests into categories. Check the license and hardware requirements before planning that work. If the team proceeds, measure the result against a small set of examples with known answers before depending on it.
