What Anthropic announced
Anthropic announced on October 22 that it is donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The donation includes the name and logo, GitHub organization, and agentskills.io domain. The standard was published in December 2025; this is a governance change for an existing format.
A skill packages a SKILL.md instruction file with optional scripts, references, and assets. Anthropic says people can keep using or contributing to the standard without joining the foundation. Its roadmap proposes versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance.
Portability has practical limits
The current specification provides an optional compatibility field for environment requirements. Its allowed-tools field is experimental, with support varying between implementations; supported script languages also depend on the agent. A shared format does not settle every tool or runtime requirement.
Our take
A small team could use a reviewed skill to carry a writing checklist or repeatable document workflow between compatible tools. Keep the instructions readable, name their dependencies, and try a harmless example before using important business material.
Review bundled scripts and the tools they use as carefully as the instructions. A foundation home is useful governance context, but it does not establish that a particular download is safe or that two agents will carry out the same procedure identically. We have not installed or tested a skill for this briefing.
